I’m sure I am not the only one asking, Why? Why the disaster? Why the heartache? The historical hurricanes along our coasts, the earth in upheaval in Mexico and the fires devouring whole communities and me searching for God in it all. I believe what we see in the physical has its birth in the spiritual. So many times we don’t discern the spiritual atmosphere leading to what we see on the nightly news and this is why so many gut wrenching world events leave us in confusion.
In the midst of grappling with what is happening all around us I came across a word Doug Addison gave concerning my very questions and it resonated with my spirit. So I have done further research on the idea. Please understand I am not coming from a place of judgement. And I don’t believe God has judged and is punishing us. Truthfully, though, left to our own devices we do a pretty bang up job getting our own selves into trouble.
Doug Addison’s message was clear to me that day: STOP COMPLAINING and START PRAYING! https://dougaddison.com/2017/10/prophetic-word-for-october-what-we-need-to-do-to-stop-this-angry-whirlwind/ He was asking God about the tumultuous atmosphere in recent weeks and wrote about how our speech has ramifications beyond the rise and fall of words on our lips.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Proverbs 18:21
In my previous blog Was Jesus a New Age Hippie? I talk about energy and how a positive thought can raise your vibration 10 Hz and a negative thought lower it by 15 Hz. As the energy of thoughts are converted to the energy of words I believe we are certainly making an impact on our environment. And I am not talking about recycling!
For many of us the animosity, frustration and combativeness has been overwhelming. We see it on our Facebook, the nightly news and even across the dinner table with friends and family. Hot button topics ranging from protesting the national anthem to white supremacy and our president. It all adds up. All those little Hz add up from negative thoughts that beget words that beget actions beginning with you and me and our neighbor and our neighbor’s neighbor. All the complaining must create a sizable energetic snowball!
Hurricanes and fires and floods and earthquakes almost seem like a tragic poetic analogy of emotions currently being generated and released. Unfortunately its more than an analogy, it is our reality. How does our mountain of negative energy affect the earth, the waters and the wind?
Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. And we believers also groan… Ro 8:19-23
What grabbed my attention in that passage was “against its will, all creation was subject to God’s curse.” Not just humans. Lets look at the Fall of Man in the Garden:
Then to Adam the Lord God said, “Because you have listened [attentively] to the voice of your wife, and have eaten [fruit] from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’;
The ground is [now] under a curse because of you;
In sorrow and toil you shall eat [the fruit] of it
All the days of your life. Genesis 3:17
(Side note: ouch ladies! Lesson learned. Encourage your husband to hear the voice of God and obey!)
Back to my point, because of man’s ill choice not only do we as humans suffer the curse, but the earth suffers as well! It’s an obscure principle perhaps. I have read both those passage a million times and never made the connection until recently.
Let me hedge a little and say, yes, there are natural weather patterns and cycles of forests and such. However the voracity and unusual number of disasters we have experienced in such a short period of time and the simultaneous intense sound of complaining and animosity make me say, “hmmmm”.
Bare with me…. in physics if a negative thought lowers vibrations that lead to sickness and decay in our bodies then is it possible that the sound of an extended collection of negative thoughts can effect our atmosphere? Our thoughts are energy. The wind is energy. The tension and release of the earth is energy. Is it possible we are witnessing the rocks crying out according to Luke 19:40? Are we more busy complaining than worshiping? The Hebrew word for wind in this next passage is rûacḥ, meaning “anger”.
They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind… Hosea 8:7
Draw your own conclusions but regardless if we agree or not that our collective thoughts and words can change the earth I can tell you with certainty that the Word of God is clear about our speech!
Those who guard their mouths and tongues keep themselves from calamity. Proverbs 21:23
Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone. Titus 3:1-2
Remember the old saying, “If you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything at all?” Well if you are really at a loss for positive words then I know you can at the very least say the name of Jesus. And that word is the most powerful word to come across our lips! The name of Jesus calms the storm and saves the soul.
